From the 1st of January 2017:
- Smoke alarms that are older than 10 years must be replaced with photoelectric smoke alarms in compliance with AS 3786-2014
- Faulty smoke alarms must be replaced immediately
- Ionisation smoke alarms must be replaced with photoelectric alarms
- Smoke detectors must be hardwired or powered by a 10-year lithium battery All smoke alarms must be interconnected
From 1st of January 2027:
- All townhouses, units and homes must have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms installed Smoke alarms must be installed on every storey, in each bedroom and hallway that connects bedrooms and the rest of the property
- Highly recommend hydroelectric 240 volt or 10 year lithium smoke alarm
