As of 1st of January 2017:
- Smoke alarms that are older than 10 years must be replaced with photoelectric smoke alarms in compliance with AS 3786-2014
- Inoperable smoke alarms must be replaced immediately
- Ionisation smoke alarms must be replaced with photoelectric alarms immediately
- Smoke alarms must be hardwired or powered by a 10-year lithium battery
- All smoke alarms must be interconnected
Highly recommended:
- Smoke alarms should be installed on every storey
- Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom
- Smoke alarms should be installed in hallways which connect bedrooms
As of 1st of January 2027:
- All homes, units and townhouses must have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms installed Smoke alarms must be installed on each storey, in each bedroom and hallway that connects bedrooms and the rest of the property
